Crossbowman/Sniper Build

==>Bowman Guide List<==

FA-less Crossbowman + Sniper build

This guide is centered around Crossbow Men / Snipers, who chose to go FA-less.

Unlike mose bowmen guides that are centered mostly around hunters, this one takes into account the specifics of using a crossbow. Being a FA-less Sniper is an awesome experience, that mixes huge damage, eye candy skills, and strategy. This build is intended of course to those who want to reach 3rd job (Sniper) and experience the game at these levels.

Common questions

What does "FA-less" mean ?

It means skipping the 2nd jop skill, "Final Attack", entirely. This allow people who do it to max almost all other 1st and 2nd job skills, and enter 3rd job with a complete collection of skills.

Why would one want to skip that skill ?

* It disrupts the Iron Arrow flow. IA is used to mow down mobs of monsters, and since it does not stun them, the xbow man has to keep attacking with IA until the mob is gone - IA has a very good kickback due to high attack power concentrated in one single arrow. If a Final Attack pops out during that process, the arrow that is fired will hit the 1st monster of the stack, while the remaining monsters will overrun the xbow man, making him whack on next attack or run to find another shooting position.

* Xbowmen have a slightly slower firing rate meaning the Final Attack slows down this process even more.

* this skill does NOT work all the time making it unreliable - for instance if you want to rely on it to 1 hit KO monsters you cant

* When FA activates it prevents you from jumping. It's a very bad thing in front of ground thumping monsters (like Yetis) or bosses.

* It does not work with 3rd job attack skills (Strafe, Blizzard). So basically it becomes useless after level 71 - waste of skill points.

But aint levelling easier with FA ?

Maybe so, but again you have to factor the lack of mobbing ability of this skill, as it disrupts Iron Arrow, and the fact there are places to train on mobs (with IA) that still give good experience. Overall the levelling speed to 3rd job is very slow for ALL bowmen, especially in the high 40's up to level 70.. Bowman is a class that takes dedication.

Arrow Blow or Double Shot ?

The answer would be Double Shot as it's more efficient (it deals more damage).

Some people choose to go with Arrow Blow still, because of it's inherent strong kickback power.

All in all if you plan to reach 3rd job (which this build is about) it wont make a difference in the long run, just more time to level during 2nd job, but after you'll be using Strafe anyway.

What about AP ?

The AP allocation for crossbowmen is the easiest:

STR = your level

DEX = put everything else there

INT = 4

LUK = 4

What i do (for example at levels 7x) is i raise DEX 5 times on levels 70 to 78, then STR 5 times on levels 79 and 80. I adjust the STR allocation to minimum according to the +STR bonus of my clothes... For instance if i have +2 STR on my clothes, i'll only get 78 STR at level 80.

The objective is to put as many points into DEX as possible, as it means more damage !

Note under level 15 you can put more points in STR if you plan to use a close combat weapon, just dont raise it over 18 (required STR for the battle crossbow).

Now to the level-by-level guide.

I'll use the following format:

(level): (skill) x(number of SP)

which means when you reach the said level, you'll put the said number if SP in the said skill.

1St Job: Bowman, Double Shot

Code:

10: Arrow Blow x1
11: The Blessing of Amazon x3
12: Amazon Eye x3
13: Amazon Eye x3
14: Amazon Eye x2 (MAXed), Critical Shot x1
15: Critical Shot x3
16: Critical Shot x3
17: Critical Shot x3

25: Double Shot x3
26: Double Shot x3
27: Double Shot x3 (MAXed)
28: Focus x3
29: Focus x3
30: Focus x3

Final 1st job (Double Shot) skill recap:

The Blessing of Amazon = 3 (/16)

Critical Shot ........ = 20 (MAX)

Amazon Eye ........... = 8 (MAX)

Focus ................ = 9 (/20)

Arrow Blow ........... = 1

Double Shot .......... = 20 (MAX)

Comments:

I put arrow blow early because

* it's mandatory in order to get Double Shot

* it's useful at level 1 (141% damage)

It can eat some potions though, so dont abuse it.

I choose important passive skills first, so you may use Arrow Blow until level 22-23.

You can choose Arrow Blow instead of Double Shot. In this case the end of the build looks like this:

1St Job: Bowman, Arrow Blow

Note: This build is not really recommended, unless you really know what you're doing. Generally Double Shot is advised as it's more efficient. Still Arrow Blow has its supporters, see above for discussion.

Code:

(... under 21: see above ...)
21: Critical Shot x1 (MAXed), Arrow Blow x2
22: Arrow Blow x3
23: Arrow Blow x3
24: Arrow Blow x3
25: Arrow Blow x3
26: Arrow Blow x3
27: Arrow Blow x2 (MAXed), Focus x1
28: Focus x3
29: Focus x3
30: Focus x3

Final 1st job (Arrow Blow) skill recap:

The Blessing of Amazon = 3 (/16)

Critical Shot ........ = 20 (MAX)

Amazon Eye ........... = 8 (MAX)

Focus ................ = 10 (/20)

Arrow Blow ........... = 20 (MAX)

Double Shot .......... = 0

Crossbow Booster = 20 (MAX)

Power Knock-Back = 20 (MAX)

Soul Arrow ..... = 20 (MAX)

Iron Arrow ..... = 30 (MAX)

and changes to 1st job:

Focus ................. = 20 (MAX)

The Blessing of Amazon: = 3 (/16) (4/16 if you went with AB)

Comments:

Iron Arrow at level 1 is already useful so use it early.

I choose to max Iron Arrow first as going FA-less means hunting mobs of monsters in order to get decent exp.

This means also having good jump-shooting skills, and scrolled (for speed) equipment.

I finally chosed to get Focus at the end of 2nd job, as it'll be at least more useful than anything else at this point.

Where to train when you're FA-less

Note: I dont really know about Ludi training places at these levels

30: PQ all the way to 31

31-37: Wild boars, all the way. Go see the dark axe stumps at Over The Wall or East Rocky Mountains for a change of pace (and less KSing). Experiment with Iron Arrow !

38-44: Fire boars, jr kitties are good choices. jr kitties upper platforms are excellent for exp when they're crowded (iron arrow through them !), or do Ludi PQ if you have the chance to get in

45-52: Copper drakes (solo or party) or Stone Golems (with party only, use Booster + Haste for fast exp), or solo at lunar pixies, or Ludi PQ until 51 if you like it.

53-59: jr yetis (Iron Arrow all the way, try to hit groups), luster pixies (same), dungeon drakes (slower, Double Shot most of the time).

60-65: drakes meal table is not bad if you've got a party, best are Luster Pixies (bottom of last map, get a warrior team mate to clean the top), Zombies are not bad as well (again with someone else for 1/2 of the map, or else the spawn is too much spread apart), Dark Stone Golems are good both in solo and in party, Hectors wouldnt be too bad but the maps they're on are not very practical.

65-70: Zombies can be good with a party. So are lusters (but a bit less exp now). For a refreshing change, white yetis (transformed or not) can be fun. Dark golems are still a good bet with other ppl activating the spawn. White pangs are still a valid option. (no idea about ludi hunting places, i dont go there often)

The general idea with training in 2nd job, is to use Iron Arrow to its full potential: choose mobs of monsters you can hold back 6 by 6, and try to have a 1:1 or less kill ratio (1 shoot, 1 kill).

For example at lvl 53 at jr yetis, 4-5 shots = 6 kills. The ratio is good (and so is the exp). Or at lvl 50, about 5 shots = 6 kills at copper drakes. Try to keep this kind of ratio, and hit mobs of monsters, instead of big solo monsters.

3rd job: Sniper, Low MB / Thrustless, AE+Eagle combo

116: Mortal Blow x3
117: Mortal Blow x3
118: Mortal Blow x3 (14)
119: Thrust x3
120: Thrust x3

Final 3rd job skill recap:

Thrust ....... = 6

Mortal Blow .. = 14

Puppet ....... = 20 (MAX)

Blizzard ..... = 21 (/30)

Arrow Eruption = 30 (MAX)

Golden Eagle . = 30 (MAX)

Strafe ....... = 30 (MAX)

Some questions people might ask

Why the 1st point in Blizzard at level 70 and not Strafe ?

* At level 70 you will be hunting zombies full time. Whatever your equips are, you'll need 2 hits to kill a zombie with Double Shot and Strafe. Yes it will not make any difference in your training speed.

* Strafe uses substantially more MP than Double Shot

* You'll still max Strafe at level 80 anyway

* Blizzard even at level 1 is amazing, and opens a whole new lot of possibilites in regard to monster hunting. Have fun going to Werewolves, Dark Yeti & Pepe and so on !

Why not delaying Strafe ?

It's the most important skill, maxing it means max damage, max training speed. I know it's tempting to raise the "fun" skills earlier but this way is the fastest to go through the painful 70->80 stage.

Why the low Mortal Blow ?

I am not convinced in the real efficiency or usefulness of that skill.

Eruption deals with the close combat already. With Blizzard, Puppet and Eagle mobs are supposed to stay away for starters. I wouldnt rely on a skill that does NOT work all the time (like Final Attack, by the way) especially in areas where monsters can kill me in 2 hits (areas where i'm training...)

Comments:

Being FA-less it's time to get on the offensive skills.

Blizzard does not activate critical so i put it lower on the priorities than i did before.

Blizzard is used to hunt monsters that we shouldn't :) Since Snipers can hit about every monster in this game, the only monsters we cannot hunt are those resistant to ice. The technique is simple:

Blizzard - Strafe - Strafe - Blizzard - Strafe - Strafe - repeat...

(you can replace Strafe with Double Shot at level 70)

Just make sure that once you pressed the Blizzard key, you *immediately* press the Strafe key, dont wait fot the shooting animation to end, then Strafe will chain, otherwise there will be a delay that only allows you 1 strafe before the monster unfreezes and starts moving again.

I may drop thrust at the end, to put more points in Mortal Blow, if this skill is really worth it.

Otherwise the rest of the build is now quite definitive, i have spent a lot of time thinking on it and tweaking it.

Where to train when you're FA-less AND 3rd job

Levels 70-78: Sadly, Zombies are your best exp getter, but they are closely followed by Mixed Golems who have far better drops - they make a good relief when you're fed up with the insanity going on at zombie maps. For a quick change i tried transforming Yetis (Sharp Cliff I) and they werent so bad, although they are a money loss (HP pots usage..). Upcoming "golem forest" maps in GMS are very promising...

Levels 79-80: Reaching maxed Strafe means awesome damage. With the Blizzard combo it allows some unusual hunting places. First place i found: Dark Yeti & Pepe, and it had a quite good exp rate due to the high exp of these monsters (1415 exp !) and the now high killing rate of the blizzard + double strafe combo. This is a reason of maxing Strafe early :) With only one dark ynp per platform it makes hunting them easy, get rid of the regular yetis that get in the way then proceed with the dark ynp. Well Zombies can still get a regular exp + meso income...
